Two things are well established. First, sleep runs in roughly 90-minute ultradian cycles, moving predictably between lighter and deeper stages. Second, the sleeping brain filters out steady, unchanging sound through thalamic sensory gating — a real, published reason continuous white noise has limited effect once you're actually asleep.
Dial Up Delta doesn't try to detect your sleep stage with a motion sensor or an all-night microphone. It uses the predictability of the ultradian cycle to introduce sound within the window your brain is approaching or entering delta — sound that arrives as a change, which is what the gating research says the brain actually responds to.
Timing is only half the equation — delivery is the other half. The stimulus has to be loud enough to register without being loud enough to wake you, which a phone speaker across the room can't reliably control. Sleep has four stages. The deepest — delta wave (slow-wave) sleep — is the stage most closely tied to the brain's own overnight maintenance work.
The glymphatic system, the brain's waste-clearing network, is overwhelmingly concentrated in deep delta sleep — cerebrospinal fluid movement that helps clear metabolic waste, including Adenosine, Tau, and Amyloid, is far higher here than in lighter sleep or waking.
The problem: delta wave sleep naturally and progressively declines with age. Beginning around 45, many adults get meaningfully less of it. Less delta plausibly means less overnight clearance — though the size of that effect in humans is still an active area of research, not a settled number.
